Teachers Making a difference
Art from the Heart
Elyse Martin, a CTU member and art teacher at Jordan Academy, is a teacher making a difference. She believes in “Art from the Heart” and that students can build self-esteem through creative work. Last year, Ms. Martin began having her students make wall quilts, with every student participating in the class project. Each child paints his own square, which then is glued to the base of the quilt.
As the designer of the kits used to create the wall quilts, Elyse has donated her kits to other teachers. The completed wall quilts subsequently were sold as part of a fundraising drive to raise money for the CTU Tsunami and Hurricane Relief Funds. Children involved in these projects are proud that their artwork helps contribute to relief aid.
A completed quilt, displayed by Ms. Martin in this picture, has been donated for sale at the CTU Student Special Assistance Fund’s silent auction, which will take place at the annual CTU Spring Luncheon.
Elyse recently encouraged her students to enter the Twelfth Annual Bulls Art Contest where two from her class, Deborah Thomas and Nelson Love, won first and third place honors.
Elyse Martin is only one of the CTU’s 33,000 members who make a difference every day in the lives of Chicago children.

The mission of Project Linus is to provide love, a sense of security, warmth, and comfort to children who are seriously ill, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer "blanketeers".
